WE’RE WELCOMING LOUISE HAIGH MP, THE NEW TRANSPORT SECRETARY, WITH A GREETING CARD. WE'RE CONGRATULATING LOUISE ON HER APPOINTMENT AND TELLING THEM IT’S TIME FOR CHANGE. IT’S TIME TO ACT ON PAVEMENT PARKING.

As an immediate priority towards Living Streets’ first steps for child-friendly streets, we’re calling on the new UK Government to provide safe walking routes to school, with an urgent end to pavement parking.

Vehicles parked on the pavements can cause an obstruction, forcing people into the road. This is a particular problem for disabled people and families with children and pushchairs. This is quite simply, too dangerous to continue. Pavements are for people, not cars.

Pavement parking increases maintenance costs of repairing cracked and damaged paving, adding an unnecessary financial burden to already cash-strapped councils.

Alongside our supporters, we’ve been campaigning on this issue for over 50 years. The time for change is now.

"DEAR LOUISE HAIGH MP,

Living Streets, the charity for everyday walking, would like to congratulate you on your appointment as Secretary of State for Transport.

We believe that when we design streets for children, we create places that work better for everyone. So, we’ve produced our first steps for child-friendly streets, with our immediate priority for the new UK Government to act on pavement parking.

Vehicles parked on the pavements force people into the road. This is dangerous for everyone but is a particular problem for disabled people and parents/carers with young children.  When asked, 80% of parents said they would feel safer allowing their child to walk school if vehicles weren't parked on pavements.

In the first 100 days of the new Government, we call for the publication of the results of the Department for Transport’s Pavement Parking consultation, which closed in November 2020. We also would like to see your plan to end pavement parking in England for good.

Yours sincerely,

Living Streets – the UK charity for everyday walking."
